Self care tips for when you're feeling lonely - Mental Health Awareness Week

Posted on May 13 2022

As you may know, 9th-15th May is Mental Health Awareness Week and this is something that is really important to us here at Sunday's Daughter.

Our main company values is kindness and caring towards colleagues, customers and strangers as you never know what may be going on behind closed doors.

The theme this year is 'loneliness' and this is something that can affect anyone at any point in life, particularly over the last 2 years over the pandemic. In fact, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year.
Mental Health Awareness Week - Self care tips for when you're feeling lonely - Sunday's Daughter

For those of you that may be feeling low right now, we've put together a few of our own personal ways of self care when times are tough:

1. Reach out to friends. A problem shared is a problem halved and it's so important to have people around you to talk to when needed. It'll help you put things in perspective, prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and you can help find solutions together. They'll remind you that you are loved and you are not alone.

2. Exercise. It doesn't have to be a 5 mile run or a heavy gym session (unless you want to, of course). Even just a calming stroll along the beach, doing some yoga or taking the dog for a walk. Anything that gets you moving will boost your energy and improve your mood, therefore doing wonders for your body and mind.

3. Look after yourself. Take a break, unplug from social media, have a bubble bath, style your hair, cook your favourite meal, read a new book, watch a film, get your nails done, have an early night, any of life's little pleasures that'll help give you a little TLC.

4. Do something you love. What hobbies do you have? What did you used to love doing that you haven't had a chance to in a while? Whether it's painting, swimming, knitting, sailing, travelling - literally anything - it'll keep you busy and distract you from negative thoughts so make time for it!

5. Give your pet a cuddle. You are their whole world and they can sense when you aren't feeling yourself! Did you know that being around animals can help lower stress levels? (Our Odie often acts as a therapy dog for us here in the office when we are having a tough day). And, taking your dog for a walk around your local area could even allow you to chat with other dog walkers.

 6. Surround yourself in nature. Sitting outside in the sun and getting some vitamin D, walking along a park appreciating the nature or even planting your own flowers and greenery in the garden and watching it grow and thrive. Being outside increases feelings of calmness and reduces symptons of anxiety.

Mental health can be just as serious as physical health and it's great that as a society this is finally becoming more recognised. But as this #mentalhealthawarenessweek comes to an end, we must still continue to talk about mental health every day.

If you ever feel that you've got no one to talk to, we'll list the numbers of some of the charities below that are always there to listen:
